VestedIT - Introduction
VestedIT is an effort to transform IT Outsourcing by unlocking innovation and dramatically improving operational and economic outcomes over the life of an outsourced relationship. It represents a fundamental paradigm shift in the way businesses and IT service providers work together –-moving from basic transaction and cost based outsourcing contracts, to performance and outcome based contracts.
VestedIT is an extension of the pioneering research in Vested Outsourcing methodology (http://www.vestedoutsourcing.com/) by the University of Tennessee in conjunction with the United States Air Force and validated with field research within the Enterprise. The structured methodology and toolsets that were developed for Vested Outsourcing, are being adapted for use by Fortune 1000 companies as they strive to make IT Outsourcing relationships a win/win for all parties involved.
Outsourcing is Broken - How VestedIT Can Help
For many companies, the results from outsourcing IT infrastructure and application development range from disappointing to disastrous. Though the root cause is unique to the specific circumstances of each relationship, there are some universal flaws in conventional outsourcing relationships that can result in reduced value, lack of innovation, increased risk, compromised service levels, combative interactions and lack of alternatives.
Ideally, outsourcing relationships should reliably deliver IT infrastructure and application development at measurable value, at costs that are aligned with business objectives and that offer incentives that encourage innovation to transform how the work is done over time. The needed move towards performance and outcome based IT outsourcing contracts has been a topic of conversation for some time, yet there has been a gap in knowing what steps should be taken next. That is where the structured methodology and toolsets that are part of VestedIT fit in.
VestedIT combines the four influential business concepts of the 21st Century: outsourcing, collaboration, innovation and measurement. Like the Lean Manufacturing movement, VestedIT is about streamlining and eliminating non-value-added activities regardless of who is doing the work. Taking this to an even higher level, what VestedIT does is offer rigorous methodology and tools for systematically developing, implementing and governing IT outsourcing relationships.
VestedIT is a win for IT service providers because it can lead them to provide higher value services, deepen and lengthen customer relationships and operate more efficiently and thus, achieve better profit margins. The company benefits by receiving a higher level of service that maps to its operational requirements and keeps costs under control.

VestedIT Research
Capto Consulting founder and President, Tracy Currie has joined the program faculty at the University of Tennessee to lead a research study on IT Outsourcing, in an effort to customize the Vested Outsourcing methodology and toolset specifically for IT Outsourcing and ways to improve operational and economic outcomes over the life of an outsourced relationship as an extension of the pioneering research in Vested Outsourcing methodology by UT’s Kate Vitasek.
Currie’s research will study the outsourcing practices and results in the Fortune 1000 and other large, public sector organizations. The research seeks to validate the broader Air Force study results in IT Outsourcing and then extend the methodology and tools specifically for IT Outsourcing. The study is underway, with initial results expected during the second quarter of 2010. Fortune 1000 companies interesting in participating can contact the UT research team at www.capto-consulting.com/ut-it-outsource/
